🎉 Celebrating a milestone moment as Black in Physiology marked its 4th Conference for Black Physiologists this year! As a co-founder and the inaugural president of this empowering organization, I'm filled with immense pride and joy for the strides we're making in the scientific community.

This year, my talented trainees once again showcased their groundbreaking research during the poster sessions. Their dedication to advancing the field of physiology was evident through the depth and innovation of their presentations.

A special shoutout to Adaku, who, after clinching the prestigious Ijeoma Obi Award last year, took on the role of moderating Day 2 of this year's conference, exemplifying leadership and excellence.

It's also with great pleasure that we had Tara and Jananie serve as poster judges, bringing their expertise and insight to the fore as they evaluated the research presentations. Their contribution was invaluable in maintaining the high standards of excellence and integrity that our conference is known for.

Black in Physiology continues to be a beacon of innovation, inclusion, and inspiration. Here's to many more years of fostering a community where Black scientists can thrive and contribute to the ever-evolving tapestry of physiological science. Together, we're making history!

This World Kidney Day, we shine a spotlight on the silent killer among us - Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).

Affecting an estimated 103 million people globally, CKD has quietly climbed the ranks to become the 11th leading cause of death worldwide.

📌Prolonged use of certain immune system-suppres

📌Prolonged use of certain immune system-suppressing drugs, known as calcineurin inhibitors (CNIs), which are often prescribed after organ transplants to prevent the body from rejecting the new organ, can lead to serious kidney damage.

📌Our research has shown that these drugs can cause a harmful process in kidney cells, turning them into a cell type that contributes to scarring and deterioration of kidney function. This scarring process is driven by a specific biological pathway involving TGF-β, a protein that plays a key role in this transformation.

📌Understanding this mechanism opens up new possibilities for research aimed at finding ways to block this harmful pathway. The goal is to protect the kidneys while still benefiting from the immune-suppressing properties of CNIs, offering hope for safer long-term outcomes for transplant recipients.
